Silhouettes Tutorial~

Easy tutorial for making silhouettes...

I had each one sit in a chair near a window and just flash me a smile to get warmed up~
Then I faced them to the side and gave a certain something to look at...
I filled the frame with their profile.
{May take a few shots to get the just the right side view}~
Next I printed each photo on white copy paper and placed on top of a black piece of construction paper.
Very carefully I cut around the profile of photo and black paper.
When complete I had a beautiful silhouette.

I coated the back of the silhouette with rubber cement and while wet attached to manila paper... could use just a simple piece of copy paper~
Once completely dry, I hung them from a fishing line with clothespins.
I knew they were perfect when they kids came in from playing and EK said, "Mom, I really like the silhouettes!"

Language Idea~
EK is learning all about quotes and how they are written with quotation marks.
Today after I read Cranberry Thanksgiving, I had her go through and only read the words "spoken" by someone in the story.
She loved it.
Then she chose her favorite passage and recorded in her journal.
I think it was a much better activity than something suggested in her lesson.
Tonight as I was writing this and she was looking over my shoulder reading every word I wrote, she saw HER quote from the day!
That is when you know real learning is sinking in!

Munchie~

and decided to put a little different spin on it.
Meet Munchie~
Scott cut a slit to create a mouth on a tennis ball and I added the wiggly eyes... Munchie.
What does he like to eat???
Colors, numbers, letters... just about any skill you can think of~
I used colorful letters (gathered A-Z), put #s (1-26) on the back
and dropped everything into a big basket with a dry erase dice (color dots attached).

SO many ways you could play and even within the same game for various learning levels.

Today...
EK: Roll dice, find letter that color, say letter/sound/word, and spell word that begins with letter. Feed it to Munchie.

SJ: Roll dice, find letter that color, say letter/sound/as many words as she could think of. Feed Munchie.
(later will have her sound out her word and write on dry erase board OR magna doodle)

WP: Roll dice, find letter that COLOR, name the color and try for the letter. Feed Munchie.

Biggest underlying skill is building fine motor skill when squeezing Munchie's mouth open. SO awesome.
After ALL the letters had been eaten, mom had the honor of emptying Munchie. SJ said he had a BIG burp. LOL

Play with Me~

We are rowing Play with Me this week. It may well be a favorite as of the very first day because it is full of animals! Meadow and pond animals... some of which we see and hold on a daily basis. :)
On Mondays we always read our story with a cold read and reread knowing the story line. It is important for children to get the flow of the story so I always try to do a storytelling activity to be used everyday while reading.
Today after the second reading I had the girls decide what the story made them think of (connection) and they wrote in their journal.
They also matched riddles and the animals to use for retelling.
EK loved reading the riddles and SJ loved guessing!
It's going to be a very fun week!

Birthdays, Stitches, and a Wedding~

Rosie and Leighton celebrated their birthdays four days apart, and we had a ball at Leighton's Magical Unicorn Waterslide 4 YO party~ It...
