My Side of the Mountain~

Friday, April 29, 2016

We are still reading My Side of the Mountain and because we've had lots of birds around,
I made copies of a falcon so we could watercolor~
We copied a beautiful scripture on them too.
There are two books after this one and I hope we like them as well!
Read aloud is a favorite around here!!!

After a full morning of working, we changed into swimsuits and took a swim.
That's the kind of school we like!!!

Logan proposed to Amelia Tuesday evening during a photo shoot,
and they came back to our house for a proposal party~
Amelia had no idea her big sisters, Josh, and BC would be here.
Logan's family came too, and we ate dinner around the pool~
Everyone had so much fun celebrating one of the sweetest couples we know~
LOOK at that gorgeous ring, and those happy faces~
We adore you Logan and Amelia and can't wait to plan one of the happiest days of your lives!!!

And painted bird nests with a fork~
 Beautiful Art Stories~
It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.

Sunday, April 24, 2016

Logan and Mill helped us take our pontoon out of the water for a good cleaning~
Once it was back in the water, we took an evening ride out on the lake~
It is one of favorite summer past times.

It was a fun day!

Ben Curtis~

Wednesday, April 20, 2016

We were thrilled to go out and spend the day with our sweet Ben Curtis~
He has a playroom now, and it was definitely the fun place to be~
Look at the photo of Savannah and EK... almost same height~
He even got to come home with us for a couple of days~
We never get enough of him and can't wait for the next visit!!!

Frog Day~

Tuesday, April 19, 2016

This TMI but this a.m. I stood up to flush and saw a little frog sitting on the back of the toilet.
I thought 'that's funny EK tried to scare me with this little fake frog' so I took a closer look...
AND IT JUMPED!!! I almost had fainted!

I yelled for EK, and she came running.
"Oh mom! That's just a little gray tree frog."
Okay but I don't want it hopping around in the house!!!

She asked for a jar and went out to create a beautiful home for her new little pet~
The beauty of a child's soul spills forth when they hold something they love near.

As soon as the terrarium was all set up, EK came in to gather all her nature books
and began to read us everything she could find about gray tree frogs~
{EK named him Banquet, and he is our pet for the next week}
I searched through the pantry and brought out some ingredients to make edible frogs on a log~
We made frog life cycle spinners for our notebooks~
We also read lots of frog stories and poems~
 We laminated our science project~
And set up a little science table with our little nature pets~
It was a super fun day learning exactly what the kids were interested in!!! Frogs!

A Pool Day~

Today was 86 so we had to hop in~
It was freezing and didn't even phase them. :)

Nature Everywhere~

Monday, April 18, 2016

Over the last few days we've had nature surrounding us~
Evie and Holly found a caterpillar, and it's already spun a cocoon~

We have a nest full of bird eggs in our garage door opener.
Our pet black snake is slithering through the backyard.
And read on for the story about this adorable little gray tree frog. :0

Number on the Front Game~

New blog post up @ A Beautiful Symphony today~

We are a pretty scheduled family. Having routines and predictable days give our children stability.

I think the 'time game' began with EK and SJ when they had asked me for hundredth time what was next. Our days were predictable especially if we were home, so I pulled them over to the clock and asked, "What's the first number you see?" They answered the question, and I matched it with something we were doing at that time. Thus began the "Number on the Front Game". Some people refer to things done everyday at the same time, a 'Peg', breakfast, lunch, and dinner being the most obvious ones.
Eat at breakfast at 8 on the front. (8:00am)
Start school at 9 on the front.
Eat lunch at 12 on the front. You get the picture.
I truly believe this silly time game made our children more aware of schedules and routines. EK and SJ now tell time very well, and the younger four are still playing the game. Such an easy way to make learning something abstract, a little more fun.

A New Beautiful Feet Study: Horses

Thursday, April 14, 2016

As EK celebrated her 'Horse' birthday, she asked if we could do the BF Horse study.
We received it today and just look at the beauty...
Tons of wonderful horse stories and just what we wanted for this season~
We dove right in with lesson one where we read about the Arab and labeled the horse for our art notebooks.
Our friend Ms. Jennifer messaged me about a Breyer Horse barn she wanted to give the kids~
so she surprised them, and they've been playing with it ever since.
What a special gift for our family as we learn all we can about horses.
Thank you Ms. Jennifer! We LOVE you!!!

A Shakespeare Nature Walk~

To begin our day today, I placed pattern blocks on the coffee table for brain training while I read history to them.
I recently purchased a book of How to Teach Your children Shakespeare.
This was the first day I opened it up and within the first chapter, memorized our first line.
"I know a bank where the wild thyme blows."
We discussed each word, defining them, and SJ said, "Mom! We have a bank at the lake!"
Everyone grabbed their coat, we ran to the lake to get a photo on our bank, and practice our one line of Shakespeare~
EK took a wade to the dock. We looked for interesting things through the woods.
We pulled weeds in our tomato patch~
We found beautiful flowers around our yard and picked them~
Trees in our yard make wonderful places to play~
After a great walk, we pulled our favorite flower books~
 and drew~
Nature Walk Wednesday mixed with Shakespeare was a perfect match~
If you ask this crew!!!

D.E.A.R Day {Drop Everything and Read Day}

Tuesday, April 12, 2016

Today was Beverly Cleary's 100th birthday and Sarah @ Read Aloud Revival challenged everyone to DEAR Day, so we took it.
We started our morning gathered on the Story quilt surrounded by books and our Macy girl~
I had also set up reading Activities all around the house so after we read, I shouted ACTIVITY and they ran to find one~
Lots of things were out they would never choose but because it was a game, they loved it!
I also sat up independent reading areas from audible/books, tag readers, and listening books~
We even made up a game with ABC dice and scrabble cheese-its:
roll the dice, name the letter, make the sound, and name something that begins with it (older girls had to name a book title that began with the letter!)~
I would call out Story time, and they would run back to the quilt so I could read to them
and because they loved all the activities I had out,
I put them in our red chest for DEAR time anytime!~
This was late in the afternoon when they chose story cubes to play because we had played earlier~
This just might turn out to be a THING we do more often! Huge smiles!!!
