 It seems just like yesterday... picking up right where you left off?
That is my friend Pam.
We've been friends for a very long time and even though we both live very busy lives, we make time to visit.
Friendship is priceless!!!

John 15:13
There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Football Friday~

Friday, September 27, 2013

Fridays are awesome because we LOVE watching Rosie cheer for the Bulldogs~
Tonight was especially sweet because Mimi came to the game too. This weekend is going to be the best... Nan will be here tomorrow too.
What more could a mom ask for!!!

Fun Friday {The Eiffel Tower}~

The one thing that caught the boys' attention each day as we read Madeline was The Eiffel Tower so it was fitting we dedicate a Fun Friday for this amazing structure.

First we watched a short documentary on the History Channel about the history and construction~ {Social Studies}
 We all discussed what we learned while coloring our own Eiffel Tower.
We made the flag of France, listened to the national anthem, and colored a map of France (Paris).
I knew there was a Amazon video of Madeline at the Eiffel Tower so we enjoyed a little show together. {Technology}

I brought the Duplos to the school room and invited everyone to build their own tower~ {Science}
and I took pics of their creations then printed them~
 So they could write about it in their journals! {Writing}

We read our writing and returned to our towers for a {Math} activity.
I had each one break their towers and stack in groups of same colors to form a skyline.
We talked about the tallest, shortest, most, least, equal as well as some adding and subtracting.
{It was a very subtle way of getting them to clean their area.}~
 We discussed how much the French love their pastries so I made them all a waffle and we read Madeline again.
EK pulled out several other Madeline books we own and SHE read Madeline's Rescue to the group.
We discussed it being a Caldecott Medal Book and called it a very Fun Friday!

Cherished Moments~

Thursday, September 26, 2013

I used to be a night owl... lately I've been so ready for bed @ 9:30.
Oh no! How am I going to watch all the new shows? DVR! :)

Since I'm getting enough rest now, I am SO ready to get up each morning
and LOVE making my coffee to begin the sweetest time of my day~ Jesus time!
This morning I opened Proverbs 31 and read The Moment.

“And yet I will show you the most excellent way.
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love,
I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” (1 Corinthians 12:31 – 13:1 NIV)

 I decided I would I try to capture some of my Cherished Moments {CM}.

Starting my day reading my Bible makes ALL the difference in the world because when I do...
I am ready for the beautiful children that wake up to me~ {CM}
Especially this sweet senior I send off each day for only a few more months~{CM}

{Confession}... yes, I let the littles watch PBS during breakfast and {sometimes} I might watch just a little Today Show and today {maybe} they asked to watch a NEW Sophia the First and I {might} have said yes and started cleaning the house.

Before I knew it, I was cleaning and they were playing and no school was getting done~{CM}
and I was ok with that!
Beauty of home school... we did it during rest and all was well with the world! {CM!}

Before I could turn around it was time for Scott to be home {CM}
{He decided since we needed to go by the funeral home to visit a sweet family in our church,
we should also go out for a date dinner}
He grabbed dinner for the littles.
We left them with Rosie {CM} and got away for a little while.
Yes, I did take a pic of our hands while he prayed over our dinner. {CM}

So you see, The Moment really spoke to my heart and reminded me just why I write every single day on my blog...
one of these days it will all be Cherished Moments and I don't want to miss one single one!!!

1 Peter 4:8
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

Psalm 90:12
Teach us to number our days,
    that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Madeline~

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

We are rowing Madeline this week and today our discussion was about how we take care of the sick and show compassion to others.
It just so happens Josh's dad is very sick in the hospital~
So we decided we wanted to make get well cards for Mr. Ben~
They LOVED every minute and can't wait for him to feel loved!

James 5:13-15
Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.  Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.  And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

Prayer Request~

These littles ADORE their Nana and Josh~
 So we would like to ask for prayer for Josh's dad.
On Friday he had a stroke and has been in ICU ever since.
We are certainly praying for a full recovery!!!

Today as we read our book FIAR book Madeline, our discussion was about how we take care of the sick and show compassion to others.

Eccl 3:11
 He has made everything beautiful in its time.
He has also set eternity in the human heart;
yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

Fun Friday Afternoon~

Friday, September 20, 2013

Just being outside in our backyard!!!

Fun Friday: Lentil {My Five Senses}~

We began the day with a non fiction read Your Five Senses to give us an idea of what we were looking for while we listened to Lentil~
 I had torn faces out of magazines and as I read each book about the senses, they cut out that sense and added to their journal.
{To be honest I had pinned very cute activities on Pinterest that we were going to do today but decided... SIMPLE!!!}

What better teacher is there than Nature?
We took our journals and headed out to find one thing we could learn about with our senses and drew it.
Their favorite place was Ms. Margaret's muscadine bush where they tasted something SOUR!~
 We also shaded some texture from the bark of our big pecan trees!

With a little rest and just enjoying a wonderful breeze, we headed back in to color our drawings.
The boys and Evie were free to go play and I had EK find one cool fact from each book to record in her journal as well.
She did very well reading them to me.
SJ kept it real when she said, "That really wasn't such a FUN Friday if you ask me." SO since she is such a big funny girl, I had her and EK make funny faces with senses they cut out themselves.
Guess what she said about that?
"Now THAT was FUNny!"
For lunch we had a tasting party of many things grown in nature!
I'd say it turned out to be a pretty Fun Friday after all!!!

Lentil {Social Studies}~

Thursday, September 19, 2013

Today after reading our book we found Ohio on the map since this is the setting of the story and then began putting ourselves on that great big map as well~
 I printed the world, United States, Georgia, Hartwell, and our house for them to color, order, and make a little book for their journals.
We are ALL important in this big ole world!!!

Happy Autumn Moon Festival~

The Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival features the beautiful idea that we all see the same moon.
On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, people gaze at the moon and think of their loved ones far away, who might also be gazing at the same moon.
I like to think maybe my five sweet ones have mothers and fathers gazing up hoping they are well and safe~
I certainly gazed up and thought of their birthparents and how thankful I am to be their forever momma!!!
We kept our celebration low key with an all American hotdog and dessert of Moon Pies!
The girls stayed up long enough to see the moon... actually they saw it before I did.
Happy Autumn Moon Festival!!!

Journals~

Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Today we were very happy to have Addie over for a little playdate~
Amy joked we could practice what it will be like when Abby comes home...
was pretty awesome as everyone paired off to play!

Since we were already outside when Addie went home,
I thought it would be a great day to bring our journals out~
I want to share what our journals hold as they are actually treasure books for me as a mom and teacher.
Some of you may have heard the term 'Notebooking' where students write, draw, collect info, etc about a particular topic.
We actually did some that last year and kept in binders.
To say the least it was very tedious making copies, hole punching, and adding to a binder... just a whole bunch of paper.

We have also used Journals in the past but only wrote stories in them... this year I got just a little more organized (smarter) and are using them for everything except our art work.

Each child has their own journal that we work in every day. I say 'work' because we use it for lots of various reasons.
I am going to share a few pages out of everyone's journal to give an idea of what this little 'treasure' book holds!

EK~
~Copywork and dictation
~Poetry Notebook
~Social Studies writing
~Notebooking page that we glue right into the journal
~Math
~Today we all wrote Nature stories... EK's was about spiders

SJ~
 ~Science Writing
~Work with her Bob Books
~She goes anywhere in the house each day and draws a picture of whatever then we write the words together
~More Bob Books work
~Two stories she has written in last two days

PC and WP~

~Both boys trace their name and tell me the letters each day
~copy numbers or shapes
~Begun working on some patterning
~Today they both drew (EK drew for WP), they colored, and dictated what they wanted me to write. WP went back and traced the words.

EC~
(I do not stress at all about what she does... sometimes she follows directions and sometime no... it is her stage and I LOVE it!)
~Tracing name and coloring in shapes
~Cutting and gluing
~Tracing shapes with tracers
~Today she told me what to draw and I did then she colored. :)

Hope you can see why I hold these books as my treasures and what a cinch to store at the end of the year rather than a big binder.
We LOVE our journals!!!

The Trampoline~

Most days weather permitting after rest and snack we go outside for some playtime.
Today we were all in the backyard and 4 of the kids were on the trampoline.
Evie and I were playing t ball when she noticed how much fun they were having and asked to get on the trampoline.
She was terrified at first of falling through but I held her hands for a little while and EK took over~
Within just a few minutes she LOVED it~
 Playing duck duck goose just like the big kids~
LOVE beautiful afternoons making memories together!!!

Haircut Day~

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

For the girls... boys just along for the ride. :)

A Marvelous Monday~

Monday, September 16, 2013

I'm pretty sure today ranks right up there with one of my favorite school days of all times~
All because of some dollar store harmonicas that my sweet husband bought for us!
Wondering why we are sitting in the bathtub?

Lentil (An Introduction}~

Our FIAR row this week is Lentil about a little boy that really wants to sing but learns to play the harmonica instead.

At first glance of the book you might think it would be the most uninteresting book for young children
{Completely black and white}
 but oh to the contrary!
It is rich with so much vocabulary and life experiences I can see it being a two week row for our family!

Today I began with the Mystery Box and as I explained yesterday,

I began giving them one clue and allowed them to ask questions... then another clue and more questions until EK and SJ both had a guess.
I gave all the clues we had gathered and counted to 3 then both girls shouted what the mystery was... Harmonicas for everyone.
We immediately tore them open and experimented with making sound.
PC wanted to hum into it but with a little practice they were wearing themselves out.

I introduced our book for the day {Lentil} and we took a picture walk noticing many things in the illustrations.
We checked the copyright and found out it is one year older than Memommy... published in 1940. :)

Next we began reading with interactive instructions to blow a note when they heard the words Lentil or harmonica... really worked on those listening skills.
When we came to a page with Lentil playing his harmonica in the bathtub, I jumped up and began marching/singing~
"We're going on a field trip, a field trip, a field trip,
We're going on a field trip to Mom and Dad's bathtub."

Hilarious giggles then all were nestled in the tub to discover how much better we sounded in that acoustic tub.
We marched back to school and finished the story.
Tons of ideas are bouncing around after this first reading and can't wait to do more tomorrow!

Today was a BIG day for Evie... she was able to say the letters in her name, traced all of them, and colored in her shapes... the FIRST time she ever finished her page~
I am also finding it is better to have one engaging activity for her each day instead of a few to choose from. Why? She pulls them all out to make a mess but doesn't do the activities.
One day while in Walmart I grabbed a few paint palettes and stashed them away for a bright idea day... today was that day.
I had her cut on the white separating line then glue in her journal.
We worked on recognizing the colors too.
She worked on 3 different colors... good interest with this activity!

A great Introduction Day!!!

We will be rowing Lentil this week and I know they are going to LOVE their harmonicas that lay hiding in the Mystery Box for tomorrow morning!!!
Mystery Box is a great activity in which the children can ask any questions they can think of without asking if it is a certain item... I also give them clues as we go.
When everyone thinks they know what it is, I let them come up and whisper what they think.
I count to three and we all shout the answer... so fun!
But tomorrow I think the fun will come when all 5 are making a joyful NOISE. :)
I'll let you know how it goes!

Psalm 100:1
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all you lands!

Simple Sunday {Family}~

Want to know one thing that makes me super happy?
My family gathered around our table~
 LOVED having Amelia home!!!
One more thing that makes me happy?~
 Lots of giggling and let me tell you that's exactly what we heard while the girls dressed the boys in princess clothes.
Hilarious to them but NOT to dad. LOL
Simple Sundays are the best!!!
