Burning up the Road~

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

WP had another recheck today and was a smidge better.
Will be giving him breathing treatments every 4 hours around the clock for a couple of days.
Does he look sick to you?~
I only took him and Evie today... they had a ball together
and the other three had their own fun with Memommy and Max!!!
Thankful we won't be Burning up the Road tomorrow...
Instead it will be our First Day of School for 2013/2014!
Better get to bed!!!

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

I'd say this little princess has her brothers~

Right where she wants them~
Wrapped around her little baby finger.
A smart girl and very sweet brothers!!!

Dr Visit Again~

Monday, July 29, 2013

WP was still no better after a week on antibiotics so back to the dr we went today~
Dr. Steele could hear wheezing so she gave him a treatment, poked his finger, and sent us for an x-ray~
3 hours later we learned he did not have pneumonia... changed to new meds and will have a recheck on Wed.
Hoping he is much better by then!!!
On the way home we had to make a tiny Target run and you would know EVERYONE had to use the restroom~
Kids: MOM! You are not going to take the cart in there are you?
Me: Ummm yes, what else am I going to do?
{Worked like a charm!}

Is what WP said we did this morning since he is still sickly~
We are using this book for our morning Bible time this year in school~

so EK read Psalm 104:1-13 today and we drew God's creatures for our lesson.
Home Church~ Success!

Scott saw a turtle right outside his office window on Tuesday
and came right up to get EK. She scooped him up, named him {Freddie}, and took care of him all week~
As soon as he was out of his shell, she knew right away by his webbed feet he was a water turtle. She spent the week finding things he would eat and keeping his shell wet. She took him for little walks many times during the day and made sure he was snuggled in at night. Today she decided he was ready to go back to the lake. As soon as she put him on the ground, he went running right into the water and was gone. Home sweet home!

Friday, July 26, 2013

Josh, his dad, and a friend came to my dad's pond fishing today~
So you know EK had to get in on the action and nowadays wherever you find EK, you will also find SJ. Sweet Nan even decided she will stay the night {And is giving us a date night}. Yay!

The Reader~

Thursday, July 25, 2013

I could buy the most amazing reading curriculum in the world but~

She would always choose an animal book over it all!!! Love my nature girl!!!

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

This morning SJ walked into the kitchen with two magnets and said, "Watch this, Mom"... one way they 'stuck' and the other they didn't. I began asking little questions and before you know it, we were doing a full fledged science project.
~ We watched a great youtube explaining magnets and history.
~ We played with our Magnetics set.
~ We made a chart of two properties and they went on a scavenger hunt for both items.
~ We wrote in new journals.
I guess we sort of tried out the awesome philosophy of Unschooling...  the girls really like the spontaneity of it~

When I taught school, I scoured teacher books for new ideas and ways to teach my students in the summer. Now I scour twitter filled with my favorite websites and pin them to my wall for later use.

This morning I clicked on a great Writing post because EK really struggles with interest in writing.
It made perfect sense...
"To start the creative juices flowing, her method consisted of asking questions about what I needed to write. I stood by her desk as she posed different questions and typed my answers. Then we would refine and edit together. Repeatedly we did this but sometimes she would be busy and ask me to work alone until she could help. Making me write on my own worked. She passed along ownership of the writing process. As if she were standing beside me, I can still hear her voice prompting me as I write."
I decided this was the perfect answer to EK's writer's block each time she sits down to a blank page.

I had an idea...
I had she and SJ sit down in the interview chair and I began to ask them questions about magnets. Before we knew it, I had written quite a bit about what they had learned. I had EK copy almost all of her narrative and we highlighted one sentence for SJ to copy. They read it back to me once complete.
Writing DONE! and it was pretty pain free!
It wasn't long before the younger three wanted their new journals and we were ALL writing in our own ways.

This was a great way to sum it all up~
If your child is reading great literature, narrating to you, and learning the mechanics of writing, it’s not that complicated to teach the writing process. After all, you have twelve wonderful years to equip them with good language skills, listen to their stories, and encourage them to read great literature.
Keep on homeschooling!

Forever Connected~

SJ has been home almost 3 years... longer than she was in the orphanage and almost longer than the time without us. In the past I have asked her many times about her life before us and honestly she just can't remember {so she says} and I don't push her. She does think she remembers to some point things we have photos of {thankful a little camera we sent came back with photos}. In some of her photos were shots of her and a foster sister.

I think because WP was able to reconnect with his foster brother not long ago, it made SJ want that too. Today we were able to do just that through Face Time~

I know they are just little kids but their connection was easy and familiar. They showed each other around their houses and talked about just day to day things. There are so many things to be thankful for and having a Forever Connection to a foster sister is definitely one of them!!!

Simple Sunday~

Sunday, July 21, 2013

Today after church and lunch, we skipped naps and headed to the pool.
We swam for a couple of hours...
until Amelia decided her car needed washing and that's when the party started~

They decided Dad's truck needed a bath too!
Because everyone was COVERED in soap... back to the pool we went.
Amelia had the three little littles take off swimmys today for swimming lessons.
They did very well... later Evie asked if she could take her's off and I agreed thinking if she needed me I was right there.
LOOK what happened~

Amazing to say the least!!! 7pm... hmmm~ dinner?
Yes... dinner and a movie~
Perfect ending to a beautiful Simple Sunday!!!

Lake Hartwell Property and Horse Heaven

Saturday, July 20, 2013

Scott has a new property for sale {1/3 acre} on Lake Hartwell. It features a two bedroom, one bath cabin with screened porch on back and a short walk to the platform dock. The outside has been completely repainted and inside is getting a update including paint, flooring, and new countertops. He is asking $49,900 and would love to show it to anyone interested. Please email me if you have questions.

Back of Cabin and view to/from lake~

Rosie and Hank took EK to feed some horses tonight!
She was in Horse Heaven~
LOVE smiling faces!!!

A FUN Free Friday!!!

More Appts~

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Payne had his 4th SB appt today and met with the physiatrist
{rehabilitation physicians, are nerve, muscle, and bone experts who treat injuries or illnesses that affect how you move}
and received another great report.
There were a couple of concerns with his feet rolling and his ankles being weak
but that will strengthen as he continues to grow and play.
We were given the green light for another year~

{We had the whole gang in tow and they did awesome!}
Later I was excited to pick up my new specks~
I put them on and said... "Someone just photoshopped my world"~ can't believe how bad my eyesight was!
Everything just got a good sharpening! SO excited!
Hoping after a few days of wearing them I will embrace the progressives and not feel dizzy!!!

PS... I think I forgot to post this AWESOME photo of Rosie and her friends not long ago at the pool~
Doubled my group from 5 to 10 and didn't bat an eye.
5 Teens + 5 Littles = 1 to 1 and Mom gets to open her kindle! Yay!
Now whacha say Hank?
You ALL are beautiful and always welcome!!!

HGTV Brothers???~

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

What do these brothers~

Have to do with these brothers???

What do these tools~
{Yes, they are plastic pretend tools}
Have to do with this hole in their bedroom wall?
Umm hmm... demolition!!!

Seriously they were only in their room for about 15 min and when I walked around the corner,
one brother was banging with a screwdriver and the other brother was assisting... harder, harder.
I think THEY may be watching TOO much HGTV too. LOL
Thanks honey for putting a bandaid on that wall boo boo~
Tools have been put away for a while... maybe even to be outside tools. :)

A Beautiful Day~

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

Today we had friends up from Atlanta for a swim day.
The morning flew by and before we knew it, it was time for lunch.
The kids finished up and decided to play out on the playset for a little while~
All of a sudden I heard EK call me to say Lia had fallen off the playground. Lyn and I ran over to find her getting up from the ground and Lyn knew it was probably broken. We wrapped her arm in a magazine, gave her some motrin, and they were off~
Our day was cut short so they could take her to Scottish Rite for an xray... a buckle fracture but just look at that beautiful smile. I was just sick about the whole thing but SO thankful we were able to enjoy part of this beautiful day together! Blessings and love to sweet Lia... you are precious and we are so sorry for your arm. Hope you feel better very soon!!!

A Slow Monday Morning~

Monday, July 15, 2013

While finishing up my quiet time this morning, this was the scene right in front of me... all of them creating their own stories.
Hard copy blogging. :)

Morning Work~

Today while scrolling through Bloglovin I found a great post from Teach Mama called Tabletop Surprises and thought I would try the first one out. It was definitely a hit with both the girls and the boys~
Each one working at their own level and writing without even knowing they were doing so... school incognito~
Already looking forward to surprising them tomorrow morning!

Evie... Six Months Forever~

Sunday, July 14, 2013

Today six months ago we left the hotel with Payne to bring Evie into our forever~
She was placed in our arms scared to death and overwhelmed being taken away from the known for the 4th time~
Over the last 6 months sweet Evie has changed so much. I have said often... she tried to push us away SO fiercely but since has fallen in love with that same fierceness~
~ Attached and bonded SO well and loves to be held
~ Still sleeps in our room on a little sofa right by our bed
~ Loves her siblings so much and plays with all of them
~ Dropped Mandarin pretty quickly and spoke English easily
~ Really good eater now but has taken time
~ Sleeps very well and still takes a nap everyday
~ Special need of Cerebral Palsy is yet to be seen... perfect health
~ Loves her babies, art things, whatever everyone else is doing
~ LOVES the pool and swimming
~ Strong willed, SO happy, drama at times, runs the show, loves to laugh and be silly
~ Loves when I say it's time for school
~ Takes my face in her hands and kisses me often
~ Says she is the baby... Mama's baby
~ Adores her Baba

As you know it has rained SO much over the last weeks so we did our mini photo shoot in the sun room and she did great~

We often call her Miss Big...
big personality, big laugh, big cry, big scream, big fun, and big love all wrapped up in a tiny 3 year old body.
God knew what He was doing when He chose her for our family and thankful she is our daughter forever!!!

Writing Time~

Saturday, July 13, 2013

When we set up the playroom, I left a table in the sun room with writing/drawing items
and today the three little littles enjoyed writing stories.
Full story @ Growing Whole Hearts.

Writing Time~

With our laid back summer schedule, I have done a lot of reading especially about teaching preschool/K age. One thing I keep reading over and over is how important play is in learning and not rushing the curriculum stuff. {Actually knew that}... Since backing off the academics so to speak this summer for the boys has given them to time to mature and grow.

As we put the playroom together, I left a table in the sun room with all sorts of writing and coloring items. So far they really haven't shown much interest but today WP surprised me! He drew something on both sides of a piece of paper and then added 4+ colors {I tell them have to add same number of colors as their age}~
He was so excited to show me and I asked him to tell me about his drawing... I wrote exactly what he told me giving him something to read to anyone that would listen. He was so proud to hang it in our kitchen and he rubbed off on the other two~
I have always believed if kids can feel sucessful with writing/drawing, reading will flow smoothly later. LOVE these little writers!!!
